UNDERSTANDING APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Most U.S colleges require international students to submit the following documents. Be sure to check on each college's website for any additional requirements that they may have:
Academic Transcripts - must be translated into English
Standardized Test Scores - SAT and ACT, although some may be test-optional
Language Proficiency Tests - this is a requirement unique to international students. Some standard options are TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo.
Letters of Recommendation - provide at least 2 -3 letters, preferably in English
As an international student, you will have a few extra steps to complete when applying to colleges in the U.S.
International Students

Personal Statement: A required essay (~650 words) sent to most colleges through the CommonApp. This creative writing piece provides you with an opportunity to tell your story, highlight values, and reflect on growth.
Resume (Optional for some colleges, but Recommended): Provides additional space to elaborate on leadership roles, jobs, achievements, and skills in a professional format, beyond the restrictive space offered in the activity list.
Supplemental Essays: Many schools require short-answer or essay responses specific to their institution, such as “Why This College?” or questions related to diversity and community.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TESTS
Most colleges and universities require international students to demonstrate English language proficiency by taking one of the following tests: IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo.
You can visit the college website to learn more about their specific requirements, as some institutions specify the tests they accept. In contrast, others allow applicants to choose from the options above.
European universities widely accept IELTS, whereas TOEFL is highly recommended for colleges and universities in the United States due to its broader acceptability.
Although DUOLINGO is considered easier by some students, its acceptance is more limited. We strongly encourage students to take both TOEFL and DUOLINGO to ensure flexibility, in case there are any issues with one of the scores.

BANK LETTER FOR U.S. COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
Once you are accepted by a U.S. college or university, they will issue a document called Form I-20 (for an F-1 visa) or Form DS-2019 (for a J-1 visa).
Before issuing this form, the school must verify that you can afford tuition and living expenses for at least one academic year. To do this, you must submit proof of financial support, which usually includes:
A bank letter or statement showing available funds.
Sponsor’s affidavit (if someone else is paying for you).
Scholarship or funding letters (if applicable).

Some universities, especially smaller or highly selective ones, might ask for proof of funds at the time of application, mainly to confirm that international applicants understand the financial requirements. In this case, you may submit a bank letter issued within the last 3 - 6 months along with your application.
